‘Gaudí: The Architect of the Imaginary’ focuses on the art of Antonio Gaudí, a major source of inspiration for Dalí. His works from the beginning of the twentieth century, which were initially perceived as whimsical and provocative, were vigorously defended by Salvador Dalí. This immersive exhibition pays tribute to the architectural genius by focusing on buildings that are now classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Embark on a journey, somewhere between dreams and reality: from the Park Güell to the Casa Batlló, the Casa Milà, and the Sagrada Família.
Through an interplay of textures and reflections, the Bassins des Lumières are transformed into hyperbolic vaulting, oblique columns, undulating facades adorned with organic motifs and mosaics made from glass and ceramics. The sun rises over the Park Güell and illuminates the mouldings, columns, and capitals, along with the textures of the rocks and the brightly coloured flowers. To the rhythm of Gershwin’s musical curves, an imaginary city—architecture without architecture—takes shape around you, who are subsequently drawn into the mad dance of the trencadis—free and colourful mosaics.
Then take a stroll in the Casa Batlló. There are great turning, spiral movements, with Art Deco forms drifting through the air. The hidden facade of the house, also known as ‘la casa de ossos’, is gradually revealed: bones, enormous tibias, giant orbits, and threatening forms emerge. The beautiful Sagrada Família then opens its doors to reveal the four grandiose bell towers. You are then plunged into dreamlike evening reflections of the basilica, with an interplay of illuminations, reflections, and the diffuse light of the stained glass. The Catalan architect’s major work is then bathed in a fiery light.
Combining spirals, bright colours, colossal, towering buildings, ‘Gaudí: the Architect of the Imaginary’ highlights the boundless creativity and boldness of the Catalan artist.
